Main Street after hours (editorial)
A twelve page photo essay on downtown Bozeman between midnight and five in the morning, shot over eight nights in February.
Mountain Weekly wanted the version of Main Street that nobody photographs, which turns out to be the eleven people who keep it running while everybody else sleeps.
Eight nights, mostly the same three blocks. The bakery on East Mendenhall starts mixing at 1:15. The plow route comes through around 3. The bar backs finish stacking chairs about the time the bakery smells like anything.
Shot handheld at high ISO on purpose. The grain is the point. Nothing here was lit and nothing was staged, which meant a lot of standing around in nine degree weather waiting for someone to do something ordinary.
The essay ran across twelve pages in the March issue. Three of the subjects bought prints, which is the only review that matters.
